Chapter 15

Cleaning up the mess of Parker Elmhurst had become a full-time job.

It seemed like a lifetime ago. But it kept coming back. Being meticulous meant he could not ignore it. This was the result of letting his impulse control his intellect.

Three years ago, when he first began to make things happen in Port Lawrence, he knew he needed an outlet.

He’d gotten too close to Kendra too quickly.

He’d smelled her perfume. He’d touched her. He’d entered her life in a real way.

And that was all well and good. But surprisingly, it had made some of what he was trying to do harder.

His plan included a longer play. Having her where he wanted required him to be in a different position than he was then. He still wasn’t quite ready.

Having her trust in him was far easier than he’d imagined. And it had complicated things, to a degree.

He knew he needed to find a way to distract himself from Kendra. So, he traveled to Wisconsin. This was a decision born of prudence, he thought then, but really, he saw now, it was a weakness in him.

He’d selected Parker Elmhurst using the very data her own parents provided.

They had chronicled every moment of the girl’s life. They made nothing private on their social media. They brazenly used their child as a little magnet for attention for themselves.

So many parents did this. It was disgusting. Stupid. But he appreciated it.

He was not a pedophile. He had no sexual interest in little children.

He was a Svengali. He was a tutor. If he saw potential, he could control it. He could use it.

Much in the same way he had molded Kendra, he could try to find another.

Parker Elmhurst could be the substitute. She’d be the perfect vehicle to express his frustrations with Kendra without hurting her or revealing himself.

Parker was fate. He thought. Fate and intelligent use of his resources. She was very similar in size and coloring to his Kendra. He was always alert to girls like Kendra. Kendra was the first. She was the mold. Parker was the most recent. And there were eleven others between them. Some were so far away, across the ocean, that it made his tokens that much more valuable.

He’d snatched little Parker. There were no witnesses.

He’d toyed with her. He knew her name was Parker, but it was fun to vex her.

“Why do you keep calling me that? You’re making a mistake, Mr. I’m not her. My name’s Parker.”

He dressed the child in the clothes he’d procured for her. Ones that looked identical to Kendra’s little outfit.

This Kendra wasn’t going to get herself in a pickle. She wasn’t going to go barging into stupid situations. She was going to listen.

Parker was terrified. Good. That was good. One of his favorite parts.

But she also grew tiresome. His least favorite part.

When her purpose was served, of assisting him in exorcising his need to dominate Kendra, to control Kendra, to see the terror in her eyes, he put little Parker to sleep.
